Water Separation Performance in Bitumen Recovery from Athabasca Oil Sands: Implementation of Separation Efficiency Index

چکیده
The oil (diluted bitumen)–water separation efficiency at steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process conditions has been evaluated in a laboratory environment by using custom-built batch setup, SAGD field fluids and commercial gas condensate as diluent. key parameters investigated are solvent amount, shear conditions, water-to-oil ratio, the presence wettability of fine solids. results demonstrate complexity oil–water process, affected dependence from one another. A new quantification approach is introduced to facilitate evaluation, based on proposed descriptor, referred index (SEI). Defined average residual water-in-oil oil-in-water indices, SEI ranges 0 1, where 1 represents “perfect” (complete) corresponds complete emulsification. allows describe throughout entire vessel volume, discrete vertical water distribution profiles, with single number, regardless experimental taken. findings show that range concentrations 30 vol % or lower, mixing speed affects performance becomes predominant relatively low 10 20 %. amount added overcomes all other effects highest addition (40 50 %) range. water-wet solids improves performance, while oil-wet impedes separation. presented this study, particular SEI, important for improving can be used develop operational envelopes injection strategies, terms location, stages, further quality product obtained SAGD.

Separation of Bitumen from Utah Tar Sands by a Hot Water Digestion- Flotation Technique
To facilitate the efficient handling of large volumes ofinformation generated by logging exploration drill cores, acomputer data bank system (GEOBANK) has been developed tostore and retrieve the normally difficult to handle geologicinformation as well as the physical testing data. The data banksystematized the logging of drill core by first developing astandard list of a...
متن کاملSeparation of oil and water in oil spill recovery operations *
The separation of water from oil that is collected in any oil spill recovery operation is a continuing and necessary requirement during every stage of the effort. Its importance is reflected in the cost of transport and storage of large volumes of oily water, the salvage value of separated oil and the added labor costs associated with long-term recovery operations. This paper addresses the effe...
متن کاملUnderstanding Bitumen Recovery from Oil Sands through Colloidal and Interfacial Phenomena
Canadian oil sands are unconsolidated sand deposits that are impregnated with heavy, viscous petroleum, normally referred to as bitumen. The total bitumen in place in Alberta is estimated at 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels and is clearly massive by world standards. Presently, 25% of the Canadian energy needs are derived from upgraded bitumen from mined oil sands. The oil sands are a complex mixture...
متن کاملMagnetic Separation of Giardia Cysts from Water
Background: Giardia is one of the infectious agents that can be transmitted by surface water and cause a disease. We designed and fabricated a magnetic system to separate the giardia cysts from water. Materials and Methods: In this study, giardia cysts were concentrated by sucrose floatation method. The cysts were mixed with physiological saline and their concentration was adjusted to 100,000 c...
